Feel good moment

As a parent it's nice every once in a blue moon to have one of those feel good moments when something happens that helps you realize that your children are actually internalizing and learning some of the things you teach them (especially since most of the time you feel like you are talking to a brick wall!) That happened to me yesterday at church. The talks in sacrament were on the theme of favorite New Testment stories. One of the ladies spoke on the story of the Good Samaritan. As she was summarizing and talking about the story Hannah turned to me and said, "Hey mom, that's the story we have talked about!" We have talked about that story from her scriptures, during family home evening, plus we have a living scriptures video about it. It was a feel good moment for me. Maybe there's some hope for me as a parent!

I know exactly how you feel!! I often felt like the only things my kinds learned was our negative traits. Every once in awhile you have one of those rewarding moments when you realize the good you are really doing! Then, after 20 years of so....you realize you have forgotten all the bad stuff and only the good remains along with your wonderful children, grown up, talented and good! And best of all...they give you grand chidren!!! What more can you ask for! You are a great mom by the way!! Mom

It's so fun to hear stories like this. I think we all wonder what gets through to kids. In reality I think they remember a lot of what we say and internalize it - they just don't bring it up until later in life. I remember walking through the hobby room after church one day (I was probably Hannah's age) thinking about the way people described how the Spirit made them feel. I remember praying that I would be able to feel it so that I knew what it was like for myself. Thinking back, it's quite amazing I picked that up considering I spent most of sacrament meeting underneath the bench, bumming gum off of the Weavers in front of us, sleeping on mom's lap, etc. Also, it's amazing to think that I prayed on and off all day long. I guess all we can do is be consistent and keep trying to teach kids. Hopefully someday it will all go into practice.
