Hannah's Surgery

I am a bit slow on blogging this but it has been quite a week for us. Hannah had surgery to remove her tonsils and adenoids on June 27th. We had to be up at Primary Children's by 6:30am so we had an early start to our day. I was actually quite relieved that we got to go in first thing and not have to wait around all day. Hannah was quite brave and didn't even cry when I left her and she went to the operating room. Her surgery was about 8am and it literally only took 30 min. The surgery went really well. Her tonsils weren't unusually large but her adenoids basically filled the entire cavity. The hard part was the post surgery. This was the part I had been most concerned about prior to her surgery. Hannah was screaming when I got back to see her. It is typical for the kids to be upset, but Hannah was really upset. The nurse was pretty sure she was in a lot of pain too. Her blood pressure was really high as was her heart rate and she would not calm down. They had given Hannah 4 doses of the morphine by the time I got back to her and she was still screaming. Hannah kept telling me her throat hurt really bad. The nurse finally called the anesthesiologist and they gave Hannah a dose of demoral. She was still upset but she would calm down some between her screaming streaks and her blood pressure started to come down. Once we got moved to the recovery room we got a movie started and I was able to get her to calm down and sleep. She was fine until her vitals needed to be checked or she was bugged in some way. She wouldn't eat a popsicle or slushy. I was surprised. She would at least drink the apple juice they gave her. We were home by 11:30am. We have had a pretty uneventful rest of the week. We didn't go anywhere hardly and have tried to take it as easy as we can. Hannah basically didn't eat for two days and then she has slowly started to get her appetite back. She still isn't back to her full appetite. She is really up and down all day. One minute she is fine and the next she is all upset. Several times a day she will "freak out". I don't know what the problem is but she gets really upset and just screams. You ask her what is wrong and she says she doesn't know. All you can do is hold her and she eventually calms down. It's great fun. They say that the kids are grumpy and irritable for a few weeks after surgery. Hannah is typically grumpy anyways so it just magnifies everything. Nights have been pretty rough. The first two nights I slept on the couch with Hannah. The third night she slept in my bed and then the last two nights she has slept in her own bed but she is waking up a lot. I expected the first couple of nights to be bad but it is dragging out longer and I'm not sure what to do about it. It's hard to know what to do. I'm hoping it works itself out sooner then later. It's just going to take time for Hannah to recoop. We are glad to have this behind us and hope it's the start to no more sleep problems once she is fully recovered.

Here is Hannah all decked out in her hospital PJ"s.

Here is Hannah right before she went to the operating room. She got to ride in the wagon which is as fun as they could probably make it. Posted by Picasa

I sure hope that Hannah is able to start sleeping better soon. A couple weeks of irritableness does NOT sound fun! We are definitely praying for you guys that things will start to improve soon and that the end product will be worth all of the current difficulties.
